This can be a tough concept for kids to grasp sometimes, especially if there has been stigma around mental health or talking about feelings in their environments before. Your Mind is Like a Garden

Your mind is like a garden! It is full of growing ideas, thoughts, and feelings. Just like a garden needs care, so does your mind. Mental health is like taking care of that garden.

The Plants are Like Your Feelings & Thoughts

Your mind garden is full of thoughts, feelings, and ideas that are planted and growing. Imagine that your thoughts are like planted vegetables that grow to nourish you. Your ideas are like flowers that inspire you!

Your Feelings and Thoughts Need Care and Attention

Just like a garden needs care, so do your thoughts, feelings, and ideas. We can take care of our garden by watering it, or pouring into our minds with positive thoughts, feelings, and experiences. Watering it can also be like talking about our feelings with someone. We can also care for our garden by making sure it gets enough sunlight. This is like doing things that bring us joy.

Sometimes There Are Weeds or Pests in the Garden

Sometimes, there might be pests or weeds in our garden that make it hard for our thoughts and feelings to grow. The pests or weeds can be negative thoughts, worries, or even hard experiences. If we can “pull the weeds” by replacing negative thoughts with more positive or realistic ones, we are taking care of our garden! This can be hard to do on our own sometimes. That’s why it’s important to talk to others about our thoughts and feelings. It’s always okay to ask for help! If you try to plant something in a real garden and it isn’t growing, you’d ask someone for help. We can do that with our thoughts and feelings too.
