Test Day Self Talk

Standardized tests can be stressful for students of all ages, but when it comes to helping kids do their best on these exams, encouraging self talk is key. So how do we help our students find that positive outlook? Keep reading to find some helpful standardized test self talk and resources to help kids practice before the big test day!

Standardized Test Self Talk

Self-talk is the inner dialogue a person has with themselves – and it’s a natural way to create confidence and enthusiasm while keeping anxiety at bay. Whether you’re talking about taking the SATs or elementary-level school standardized assessments, having an upbeat motivational outlook is essential for success! Practicing self talk and finding words that are positive, helpful, realistic, and encouraging is key.

I like to help kids start building this long before test day with activities like self talk color by number. Kids repeat self talk phrases to themselves as they color. Afterward, we debrief about which phrases were most helpful to them and why!

Some of the big standardized test self talk phrases I like to instill in my students are:

  • I am not defined by a test
  • I am more than a score on a test
  • I am a successful person
  • I can persevere
  • I am in control of the things I say to myself

These help kids remember that this test is one tiny thing they have to do and they are so much more than the test! It also reminds them that they have the power to choose the words they use to and about themselves.
