3 Analogies to Help Kids Understand Anger

As school counselors, we know how important it is to help kids understand their emotions and learn how to deal with them in healthy ways. At times, this can be especially challenging when it comes to dealing with anger. In order to help kids understand anger, we can use analogies that they can relate to and understand. Here are a few analogies that you can use to explain why people get angry and how they can manage it in a healthy way.

The Fire Analogy


One of the most popular analogies for teaching kids about anger is the fire analogy. You can explain that anger is like an oncoming fire—it starts small and builds until it takes over everything around it if we don’t stop it. Just like we need water or sand or dirt to put out a fire, we need strategies like deep breathing or walking away from a situation in order to calm down when we feel our anger rising. I use the Stop, Drop, and Roll verbiage to help them understand what to do!

The Volcano Analogy


Another great analogy for teaching kids about anger is the volcano analogy. We often think of volcanoes as something destructive, but they are actually incredibly powerful forces of nature that have been around since the beginning of time. You can explain that just like a volcano needs time and energy before it erupts, so does our anger—we usually don’t just get angry overnight. We start feeling frustrated or irritated at first, but if we don’t take steps to manage our emotions in those early stages, our feelings will eventually become too powerful for us to handle and come out as an explosion of anger.

The Pressure Cooker Analogy


If your students are old enough, you can also try using the pressure cooker analogy when talking about managing anger. Explain that just like the steam builds up inside a pressure cooker until eventually there’s no more room for any more steam and the lid pops off with hot steam escaping everywhere—our emotions can sometimes build up until there’s no more room for any more emotion and our lid pops off with an outburst of anger escaping everywhere! The key here is understanding why our lid pops off so that we can learn how to better manage our emotions before they boil over into an outburst of anger.
