We are constantly asking our students to “think outside the box,” but many of them need practical opportunities to try it out! These 5 fun activities can help you to teach kids mental flexibility whether you’re doing classroom lessons, small group counseling sessions, or individual counseling.

Teach Kids Mental Flexibility with these 5 Fun Activities
1 – Storytelling Switch-Up
Take a familiar story, like The 3 Little Pigs, and create a different ending! Write the story, draw a comic, or just act it out. Give kids an opportunity to take something familiar and create something amazing!
2 – Repurpose Regulars
Using regular items around the classroom or house like a frisbee, a bucket, or favorite toy. Challenge kids to come up with a different use for the item other than its intended purpose.

3 – Change the Rules
Play a familiar game, but change one or more of the rules! Playing Uno? When someone plays a blue card, everyone passes their hand to the left. Playing Candy Land? Everyone compliments the person to their right when a pink card is played!
4 – Cloud Visions
Spend some time looking up! What do you see in the clouds? What shapes do they make? Tell a story about what you see in the clouds.
5 – Nature Art
Find small pieces of nature and turn them into something beautiful! What else could this leaf be? An umbrella? A superhero’s cape? The possibilities are endless!
