Affirmations Activity for Kids
What You Need:
- Pipe cleaners
- Multicolored beads
- Paper
- Multicolored pens or markers
How We Do It
In the group, we read a short story about the power of words and talk about what affirmations are. Then, I offer some examples of affirmations. As a group, I ask the students to create a list of affirmations that would be personally meaningful and encouraging to them. We assign a color to each affirmation and make a list on paper.
Then, students choose a pipe cleaner. On the pipe cleaner, they place beads that are the same color as the 3 affirmations we created that are most meaningful for them. Then, they have a visual reminder of the affirmations they can say to themselves anytime! The pipe cleaner can be a bracelet or a bookmark – whatever the students prefer!
I give students a copy of the affirmations we created so they remember what each color stands for. They leave group with a goal of saying the affirmations to themselves at least twice a day.
Why I Love It
Students create their own affirmations so it’s more meaningful to them. They have a physical take-away from group that serves as a reminder to say the affirmations to themselves. And it is a great conversation starter with peers and trusted adults!
