5 Ways to Check In During Group Counseling

Part of my group counseling routine always includes a check in at the beginning of group! I like to hear about skills students have practiced, good things that have happened, low points, and things they’re looking forward to. I like to have a structure to this (so one student doesn’t dominate the group and so students don’t feel anxious about what to share).   • Horizon: something I’m looking forward to this week

Rose, Thorn, Bud

  • Rose: something awesome from this week
  • Thorn: something hard from this week
  • Bud: something good that’s coming up

Sun, Cloud, Rainbow

  • Sun: the bright point in my week
  • Cloud: the dark point in my week
  • Rainbow: something good I’m looking forward to

Scoop, Melt, Sprinkles

  • Scoop: the sweet part of my week
  • Melt: the disappointing part of my week
  • Sprinkles: something special I’m looking forward to

Score, Foul, Trophy

  • Score: something I did well this week
  • Foul: something that was hard for me this week
