Introduction to Empathy Lesson

Last week, I posted a photo on Instagram of my lesson plan for my 3rd grade empathy lesson which was very officially written on a Post-It note. We’re going to. bedoing a whole empathy unit in this grade throughout the semester, eventually moving into doing STEMpathy projects, but first, I wanted to share the details of what we did in the 3rd grade empathy lesson because it went over really well with my students!

This 3rd grade empathy lesson uses an empathy meditation, empathy read aloud, and empathy activity to teach kids about empathy.

Empathy Meditation

We started the lesson with this 5-minute empathy meditation. It was a great way to help students get focused for the lesson to come and get a little introduction to what empathy actually is.

Empathy Story

I have several favorite books on empathy, but A Little Spot of Empathy has a great explanation of what empathy is and gives several examples of empathy in action. It outlines 3 steps:

  • Identify how the person is feeling using facial expressions and body language
  • Think about a time when you felt that way (I added or imagine how you might feel if you were in that situation)
  • Think about how you would want to be treated in that situation (I also added ask the person what they need or want in this situation since we sometimes need and want different things)

This book is available free on Kindle Unlimited. If you don’t have a membership yet, it’s great for counselors! I use it in almost all of my K-3 lessons.

Empathy Activity

Using our steps to showing empathy from the book, we practiced using these Everyday Empathy scenarios. We did 2 scenarios whole group, and then i gave small groups printed cards of the other scenarios to discuss and share out. Students had great discussions and shared really insightful take-aways from each of the scenarios! It was great to hear them share about their own experiences, how people treated them, and how they’d want to be treated instead.
