4 Last Session Group Counseling Must-Dos

Planning the instructional part of group counseling is my favorite and comes with ease, but those first and last sessions are a little trickier! I listed my first session must-dos earlier on the blog, so today I wanted to touch on group counseling last lesson must-dos!

Group Counseling Last Lesson Must-Dos

1. Review Skills

I like to start out with a review of the skills we’ve learned in group. This gives students a chance to reflect on all of their growth and realize just how many new skills they have! Playing a review game is a fun way to refresh their memories and see their skills in action. We might play a board game or a dice game to give them an opportunity to answer topic-related questions or demonstrate skills learned in group.

2. Action Steps

The end of group can lead to some feelings of nervousness as that layer of support is peeled back. I like to give my students some tangible action steps to take after group so that they feel like they have a plan in place. This can look like students creating a plan on paper for situations in which they will use the skills they’ve learned or a list of strategies on a card deck ring for them to reference later. They could also set a group-related goal and monitor progress using a tracking sheet after group. I also like to let students know how they can request to see me after group ends if they feel like they need additional support.

3. Debrief

We also spend some time debriefing on the group experience. I ask questions like

  • How are you feeling about group ending?
  • What experience from group is going to stick with you?
  • What parting words do you have for your fellow group members?

4. Closing Ritual

At the very end of group, I like to close with some sort of meaningful closing ritual. This could be as simple as saying a group motto in unison or it could be something like writing positive messages to each group member before leaving. This is really dependent on the students and group focus. Some ideas for closing rituals:

  • My Hope for You: each group member shares a hope for others
  • Pass the Peace: group members stand in a circle and hold hands. One group member starts the peace pass by gently squeezing the hand of the person to their left. This signifies giving peace to another group member. This is passed all the way around the circle. Alternately, students can sit or stand in a circle. One member will start the peace pass by placing their hand over their heart, making eye contact with another group member and saying, “I pass peace to you.” This continues until all group members have received the peace.
  • I Will Remember: each group member shares one thing they will remember
  • Leave Your Mark: each group member adds their painted thumbprint to a page and these are turned into a bouquet of balloons/flowers displayed in counseling office.
  • You Impacted Me: each group member draws the name of a fellow group member and shares how that person impacted them in group
