Summer Send-Homes for Counseling

I always have students I think about over the summer. I think about how they’re doing and if they’re practicing and using skills we’ve learned together. Sending resources and activities home with them over the summer is a great way to reinforce those strategies. Below you’ll find a few of my favorite summer counseling activities to help students stay fresh on their counseling skills!

Summer Counseling Activities

Coping Skills

1. Color by Coping Skills

My students always love color-by-number activities, and these color-by-coping skills are no exception! These activities serve two purposes: reminding students of healthy coping strategies and serving as a calming coloring activity. Send these home with students to complete over the summer on their own!

2. Coping Toolbox

These coping toolboxes can be built together in a counseling session or small group before summer. Use a small pencil box or even a shoebox to organize the materials and make them easy for students to transport. You can add feelings cards, coping cards, play dough, sensory toys, printed affirmations, or anything else that is calming for your students!

3. Worry Workbook

Filled with activities for students to complete on their own, ranging from personifying their worries as creatures to talk to, practicing body calming strategies, and evaluating thoughts, behaviors, and feelings.

4. Worry Strategy Cards

A simple deck of strategy cards can be great for kids to reference during the summer. This worry strategy card deck includes breathing strategies, thought challenging strategies, thought stopping strategies, and more. Kids can pick these up when they’re feeling worried over the summer to reference familiar strategies you’ve practiced throughout the year.

5. Worry Whale

For my younger students, I love to have a worry monster or a worry whale on hand in the office. Students can write or draw their worries on a piece of paper and then place them inside the worry monster or feed them to the worry whale. The worry whale is easy to make with just a paper bag! Students can take these home over the summer to have a place to give away their worries.

Self Care

6. Self Care Digital Activity

Keeping track of vital self care activities during the summer is important for students who are spending time alone or are expected to be independent during those summer months. Students can do a self check to see how they’re doing right now and then set goals to measure their daily self care activities.

10. Self Regulation Choice Board

These file folder choice boards are easy for students to use at home to identify feelings and independently choose calming strategies. I like to make these together with students and then have them record a video explaining how to use it so we can share that with family. This helps everyone feel involved in the process and encourages students to take the lead on making space to regulate.
