Easy & Fun St. Patrick’s Day Counseling Lesson for K-2

St. Patrick’s Day falls during spring break for us this year, but I didn’t want to miss an opportunity to blend a little bit of holiday fun into our counseling lessons! My family is Irish, so I love to use this as an opportunity to normalize talking about our culture in the classroom. With my K-2 students the week before spring break, I’m doing this little-to-no prep St. Patrick’s Day counseling activity:

Read-aloud:

I start this lesson with the book, Spoon by Amy Kraus Rosenthal. It’s the story of Spoon, who thinks Fork, Knife, and Chopsticks are just so very lucky to be them! They get to do cool stuff like cut, go everywhere, and stick together. But Spoon’s mom helps him realize all the reason’s that he’s lucky to be him (diving headfirst into a bowl of ice cream is my favorite!). From here, we talk about all the reasons why students are lucky to be them!

Mindfulness activity:

For second grade, I’m using a mindfulness activity with a guided script to help them visualize the things in their life that make them lucky to be them! I didn’t use the mindfulness script for K-1; we just had a discussion about reasons they are lucky to be them and jumped right into the craft. We talked about things they love about themselves, things they love about their lives, things they’re good at, qualities they like about themselves, etc.

Craft:

We make a shamrock for the craft! On 4 hearts, students write reasons they are lucky to be them. Then, they cut out the hearts and glue them to a step to make a shamrock! Afterward, students share 1-2 reasons they are lucky to be them with the group. Time-saving tip: for Kindergarten, you may want to cut out the hearts ahead of time.

For students who are in our virtual academy, I recorded myself reading the story and a mini-lesson discussion using Zoom and then shared a Google Slides version of the craft so they could make a shamrock too!
