My Favorite Kindle Unlimited Books for School Counseling

One of my favorite purchases during distance learning was Kindle Unlimited! Like most elementary school counselors, I use books constantly in my classroom guidance lessons and my small group lessons. I find myself buying books all the time. I don’t necessarily mind because I love having a well-stocked library, but it adds up quickly! But I got a free trial of Kindle Unlimited from Amazon, and it was a game-changer for me, especially during distance learning! I loved it so much I kept up the subscription after, and I think I actually spend less on the subscription than I was monthly on books before. If you’re not familiar with it, Amazon has books available that can be read for free through Kindle Cloud Reader (you can do this on a tablet, phone, or your internet browser on your computer) with a monthly subscription (around $10). There are tons of titles that are perfect for counseling, and it was really easy to share them on Zoom with my students or record myself reading them if I was sharing a pre-recorded lesson. Check out my favorite Kindle Unlimited books for school counseling below!

The Little Spot Series

I’m sure you know about the Little Spot books by now, and they’re all on Kindle Unlimited! I used these books in K-3 lessons constantly. They’re so well-written (thanks, Diane Alber!) and have great examples that the kids can really relate to and apply. My favorites are A Little Spot of Worry, A Little Spot of Confidence, and A Little Spot of Anger.

Sticks

This is another book by the same author as the Little Spot books, and it’s fantastic! Stick learns about all the things he can do, and it’s a great book to remind kids to focus on what they can do instead of what they can’t do (yet).

The Do Over Day

This book is all about dealing with disappointments or things that make us feel like we’re having the worst day ever (like not getting to push the elevator button first). The best part of this book is the section at the end that gives alternatives for how they could think, feel, and act about minor annoyances or setbacks.

The Friend I Need

This is a great title from Gabi Garcia that reminds kids to treat themselves like they’d treat a friend and to be kind to themselves! We all need this reminder during COVID times.

Find Your Calm

This book is great for kids who are dealing with fears, worries, or anxiety. Gabi Garcia does a great job explaining what worry is (a potential danger but usually a false alarm). The mindful approach to dealing with worries and calming the body and mind are perfect for teaching kids grounding, controlled breathing, and situational awareness.

I Can Do Hard Things

It’s all in the title, right?! I love this book (another one from Gabi Gacia!) all about the hard things kids can do like feeling all their feelings, standing up to their friends, asking for help, speaking up, and more. These affirmations are great for kids and a great jumping off point for kids to make their own affirmations.

Mateo Finds His Wow

I love this book from Gabi Garcia about finding the wow in small moments. This is a great book especially for kids who are at home doing distance learning and missing things they used to go out and do before the pandemic. Mateo finds the wow in small moments and activities in his home when he takes the time to really notice them.

Listening with My Heart

This book. was my introduction to Gabi Garcia. It encourages kids to listen with empathy. Kids can see how the character listens with her heart so that she can show compassion and empathy to others and herself! For a full review of this book and a free companion activity, head over to Confident Counselors.

Listening to My Body

Finally, one last great title from Gabi Garcia! This book is a great introduction to picking up on body clues that help us understand our feelings.

  1. Hello Keri-
I’m interested in the kindle deal but want to get a better understanding of how you use it. Do you have a sample of a pre-recorded lesson or read aloud? I’m not sure how I would do this. Thanks!

    1. Hi Kelli! Technically I can’t share those lessons publicly as it would violate the copyright of the author. But, for pre-recorded I use zoom. I open a meeting with just myself and record the meeting. Then I share my screen to show the online kindle cloud reader. That way, they can see the book in large view but my face is still in the corner while I read. For in person, I just have it open on my computer or iPad and share to the Apple TV in the classroom (or smart board).
