Winter Mindfulness Activities for Kids

The month leading up to winter break always feels so chaotic to me. My students are talking about how stressed they are about finals or projects that all seem to be due around the same time. They’re anxious for the break to begin or they feel anxious about the break. So I like to do mindfulness exercises during classroom guidance lessons in December to help students pause and find a little bit of peace in the chaos. In my new mindful mornings group, I’m doing daily mindfulness activities to help us start our day on the right foot. Keep reading to find some of my favorite winter mindfulness activities for kids!

Winter Mindfulness Activities for Kids

Hot Cocoa Mindfulness

In this guided mindfulness exercise, students practice mindful breathing by smelling their imaginary hot cocoa and blowing on it to cool it off. They do a guided meditation to focus on the things that bring them joy, or warm their hearts. This activity is always a big hit as the students are easily able to get into a focused breathing pattern.

For a follow-up craft, students can glue marshmallows on a cup of hot cocoa and label each marshmallow with something or someone that brings them joy. The finished product makes a great parent gift as well!

Snow Globe Mindfulness

In this mindfulness activity, students practice “setting their snow globes” or calm their bodies. The guided meditation helps students find inner peace amidst the chaos of the season!

This activity also makes a great follow up craft for a parent gift or bulletin board. Students create a snow globe and name the things, people, and activities that help them “settle their snow globes.”

Gingerbread Mindfulness

This mindfulness exercise is always a big hit, especially with younger students (but the older students love it too!). I make gingerbread play dough and lead students through a mindfulness exercise in which they use their senses to explore the here and now. Kids love playing with play dough, the and gingerbread scent is very calming! Get the free mindfulness script for this activity on this blog post.

Snowman Mindfulness

One of my favorite activities to do after students come back from break is a mindful melt. In the guided meditation, students imagine they are snowmen on a warm beach. As they imagine the sensations around them, they begin to slowly melt into the sand. This exercise is one you can teach in your classroom guidance lessons and teachers can then use as a re-focusing tool!

Of course, you know I love a good follow-up craft to reinforce learning. This melted snowman craft is adorable and really helps the concept stick with students!
