Looking for some great books for career lessons? You'll love these books for your school counseling classroom guidance lessons! Career education is important in primary school to introduce students in Pre-K, Kindergarten, first grade, and second grade to community helpers and their career roles.

Great Books for Career Lessons

Playtown Construction: A Lift-the-Flap Book

Okay, while a lift-the-flap book might not be your typical go-to for read-alouds, hear me out on this one: this board book is packed with valuable career and community helper information! The book includes information on construction site vehicles, their operators, and ALL of the people who come together to make a construction project a success: welders, architects, plumbers, forklift operators, painters, window installers, and so many more. And brief job descriptions are offered in simple, easy to digest terms that will be a big hit with your primary students.

This is a great book for Pre-K or Kindergarten career activities for general exposure to a wide variety of careers! As an activity, have your students choose one career that was interesting to them from the book and draw themselves in the career.

Lift the Flap Tabs: Trucks

Again, this is a board book that I wouldn’t immediately be drawn to in the bookstore (or Amazon…), but it also had a lot of useful information. While the focus is on trucks, the drivers are also pictures, and their roles are described. Your students will learn about a tractor operator, oil rig driver, firefighter, EMT, construction heavy equipment operator, moving van driver, and mail carrier. Their tools and daily tasks are also pictured and described in the book.

This is a great book for a Pre-K or Kindergarten career activity. As an activity, you could have your students choose a vehicle from the book or another career-related vehicle they know of and draw themselves or a family member performing the career tasks.

I Want to be an Astronaut or a Stuntman or a Spy or a Fighter Pilot

This is one of my favorite career books because it highlights the idea that students can be anything and dream about everything! Readers hear about careers that are somewhat related and learn about their daily tasks and interests.

This is a great book to read with Kindergarten through second grade students. After reading this book, have your students create their own “I want to be a…. or…. or…” books by identifying 3 careers that interest them!

I Want to be Lion Tamer or a Vet or a Zookeeper or a Safari Guide

This is written by the same author as the previous book and is another great glimpse into related careers! We often hear students say they want to be a common professional – a police officer, a teacher, a doctor. But they might not even know about all of the related careers! It’s a great opportunity to expose students to other careers that share similar interests or values while holding completely different tasks and responsibilities!

LMNO Peas

This is a really cute book for your Pre-K and Kindergarten students. Moving through the alphabet, students will hear about the peas and their roles from acrobats to quilters to zookeepers! For an activity, work as a whole group to come up with roles the students have at school for each letter of the alphabet.

Clothesline Clues to Jobs People Do

In this fun read-aloud, students see clues hanging on a clothesline to learn about community helpers’ daily tasks. Your students will love guessing who each item belongs to! For an activity, have students draw clothes of a profession that interests them, and create a class clothesline! See if peers can guess one another’s careers.
