Mindfulness in the Classroom as a School Counselor

I’ve heard from several counselors that their big goal for this year is to incorporate mindfulness into their school counseling programs, and I think this is an amazing goal! We know mindfulness has a whole slew of health benefits, but it’s so important for the classroom too. Mindful practices can improve attention to task and grow compassion for self and others. So how can we incorporate more mindfulness in the classroom as school counselors? Keep reading for 4 easy-to-implement ideas!

Mindfulness in the Classroom as a School Counselor

1. Mindful Mondays

Lead students in a mindfulness exercise on Mondays! You can read a mindfulness script over the announcements or even visit classrooms depending on your school size. If you have a large population, record a video of yourself leading students through a mindfulness exercise and send it out to teachers on Monday mornings so that students can start the week on the right foot. Then, teachers can repeat the exercise each day for the rest of the week.

Use these 26 mindfulness exercises that your older students will love and 26 for your younger students as well! Give your teachers a poster or printable with the exercise to create an alphabet line or mindfulness area in the classroom!

2. Mindfulness Meditation Space

A mindfulness meditation space is similar to a “calm down area” but is a designated area for students to engage in purposeful mindful exercises. I’ve seen many schools recently creating a mindfulness room in the building for students to use. This may not be feasible in your building, but a small mindfulness area is doable!

Arrange your mindfulness meditation space in a private, quiet area for students to use when they need time to refocus on the here and now. Use low lighting, a sound machine or include noise-canceling headphones, and comfortable seating. You can stock your space with artificial flowers lightly scented with essential oils, play dough and other sensory items, a mindfulness story and cards, or simple mindfulness task cards that students can complete independently.

This space below is in Counselor Carter’s office! I love the calm lavender color of her walls. She’s using the animal-themed mindfulness posters & scripts. Check out her blog to see what she’s up to this year.

3. Mindfulness Centers

To directly teach mindfulness strategies in your classroom guidance lessons, let students practice mindfulness exercises through centers or stations. They’ll be exposed to a wide variety of mindfulness strategies and be able to pick something that works for them! Students can rotate through centers, spending 5-10 minutes practicing each mindfulness exercise and debrief with small groups to talk about their experiences and impressions. Again, give your teachers information on all of the centers so they can provide time for mini-mindful moments in the classroom when needed!

Have a group of students who could really benefit from more practice with mindfulness skills? Gather them up for a Zen Kids small group. They’ll learn about mindful breathing, mindful eating, practicing patience, letting things go and more. They can take these skills back to the classroom!
