Grumpy Pants Book Activity

I’m always looking for books that explain emotions in simple, fun ways without a long dialogue or a lot of text. There are so many great books about emotions, but many have too much text to hold the attention of the youngest students! I found the book Grumpy Pants, by Claire Messer on sale and am so happy that I grabbed a copy. This book perfectly describes what it’s like to feel grumpy and not know why and a couple of simple strategies for dealing with that feeling.

Grumpy Pants Book Activity for School Counseling

Penguin is in a bad mood. A very bad mood. So what does he do about it?! He takes off all of his grumpy clothes, takes a nice bath, and gets in his favorite pajamas. He uses a couple of other helpful strategies that your students can use at home or at school as well.

Grumpy Pants Washing Machine

Build your own grumpy pants washing machine to keep in your office. All you need is a washing machine template, some pants or clothing printables, and some binder clips to set it all up. Construct your washing machine as a stand alone printable for a shelf, or attach it to a tissue box to make it a bit more sturdy. I printed on cardstock to make it a bit more sturdy and plan to laminate as well. The binder clips held it up well.

Ideas for Using It

Invite students who are feeling grumpy to come into the counseling office to write or draw about their grumpy feelings on one of the pants printables. Then, they can toss it in the grumpy pants washing machine, visit a calm down area to choose a self-soothing strategy, and move on with their day. In your calm down area, include things like stuffed animals, stress balls, or other sensory items. For some students, the simple act of writing or coloring the pants will be soothing.

If you have students who check in with you in the morning and tend to arrive feeling grumpy, this is a great place for them to start their day! They can wash away their grumpy feelings that they brought with them and start their day on the right foot.
