5 Great Podcasts for School Counselors

I spend a ton of time in the car! Living in a pretty remote area of southwest Oklahoma means anytime I go anywhere, I have plenty of time to listen to something. I have never really been a podcast person until recently. When I was living in Hawaii, I spent a maximum of about 15 minutes in the car at any given time, and well, who wants to listen to a podcast when you can listen to the ocean?! But now that I have a lot more time in the car, I find myself looking for ways to learn or connect to the counseling profession (and honestly, I just couldn’t listen to the Frozen soundtrack on the way to school one. more. time.). So today, I wanted to share with you what I’ve been listening to on these great podcasts for school counselors!

School Psyched!

I love this podcast with three school psychologist who interview leaders in the mental health and educational fields. There are episodes on things like resilience, mindfulness, social emotional learning and so much more! My favorite episode: Episode 57 – The Kinetic Classroom with Dr. Lynne Kenney.

The Behavioral Observations Podcast

Something I’ve heard from so many school counselors is that they are expected to be behavior experts at school. Many school counselor training programs do not include in depth courses on principles of behavior or applied behavior analysis, so this is a stress point for many counselors out there! This podcast with Matt Cicero is a fabulous resource for learning about just that. My favorite episode: Episode 36: Training Parents to Manage Child Behavior.

Therapy Chat

I am still diving into this podcast, but there is a lot of great material here! Laura Reagan, a licensed clinical social worker, explores EMDR, art therapy strategies, trauma, attachment, mindfulness and more! She chats with people from diverse professional backgrounds including holistic treatment providers. I particularly love her focus on our universal experience of being a human. My favorite episode: Episode 106: Finding Gratitude and Peace: Self Compassion In Troubled Times.

Play Therapy Community Inspiration

I am not a registered play therapist,  but this podcast has great information for all counselors and parents! Jackie Flynn discusses strategies for working with students who struggle with anxiety, depression, ODD, grief, and more. She even has a great episode about understanding the role of the school counselor! My favorite episode: Episode 42: When a Child is Shamed.

How to Talk to Kids About Anything

This podcast is a phenomenal resource for parents, counselors, an educators! Dr. Robyn Silverman talks with counseling and parenting experts about how to approach difficult topics – sex, death, anger, and more – with children in ways that create smooth pathways rather than walls. My favorite episode: Episode 34: How to Talk to Kids About Anger & Big Feelings with Wendy Young.

I’m also really excited about an upcoming podcast hosted by fellow school counselor, Alaina Schrader! Make sure you’re following her on instagram to get updates about when she’ll be going on the air!

Are you a podcast person? What are you listening to? Do you know of any other great podcasts for school counselors? Let me know in the comments!
